Viva girl wows the crowd : Oct 06
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Bangalore: Music lovers had quite a earful last Friday night what with Viva girl Anushka wowing a clearly impressed crowd.
While she hit the national spotlight as a pop star, that evening, the bubble gum Indipop songs were junked for a bad-girl
look and voice, as Anushka belted classic and contemporary rock hits with gusto. Indeed, it was a refreshing sight to see
a female rock star on stage for a change giving a spunky performance.
Clad in a slinky red top and a short denim skirt, with wild wavy locks to complete the image, the songs Anushka chose
to perform were from the pool of popular rock numbers. If anyone thought there’d be some female favourites of Sheryl
Crowe or Alanis Morisette, they would’ve been disappointed. From ‘Let me Entertain You’, ‘Summer of
69’, ‘Pink’ to even ‘Roadhouse Blues’, there was nothing girly about the songs or her voice.
While her deep and powerful vocals were apt for this genre, her voice lacked the range and emotion that make for truly good
singing. In some parts, she was fairly screaming rather than singing. While the Roadhouse Blues meets ‘Kallu Mama’
fusion was a smooth match, the medley which included ‘Wonder Wall’ and ‘Iris’ amongst others was rather
flat. A pity, for these are songs with soul. The quality of acoustics didn’t help much either.
But she did have a good band to support her, particularly Alwyn on the guitar and Karan on the keyboard.
The crowd at Opus nonetheless, had a rocking time that evening, although some didn’t quite laugh at her attempts
at humour between songs. In all, a good gig but not a memorable one.

"Earshot" Air date: 2/14/00
Description: A demon gives Buffy the ability to overhear thoughts, and she uncovers a plot for a mass murder at Sunnydale
High.
Comments: This was the episode that they didn't show last season because of Columbine, and though I was angry at the networks
at the time I have to say that I think it was the right decision. It's a pretty good episode, and has some good one-liners
from Xander, but in that atmosphere it's hard not to think of it as a little glib and even exploitative.
